The national cupcake wave has reached Charleston’s shores, as evidenced by the spring opening of the city’s first dedicated shop, Cupcake [DownSouth], at 433 King Street.
The shop joins a growing number of similar bakeries across the country and a spurt of new books. More than a dozen cupcake cookbooks are on the market, many published within the past two years.
“Cupcakes offer nostalgic appeal, taking adults back to their childhood, says owner Kristin Kuhlke. ‘It’s something most people have a tie to.”
