A cupcake retailer finds a sweet niche
Upper King’s newest tenant is a unique shop that sells only one thing—cupcakes.
Owner Kristin Kuhlke went to New York, where she found sweet inspiration. This simple comfort food had people lined up at the door to Magnolia Bakery in the West Village, whose cupcakes became famous when they were featured in an episode of Sex and The City.
Last winter she came to Charleston, bringing the idea with her. With marketing director Robyn Hermans and baker Sherane Prish, Kuhlke developed 29 flavors, ranging from traditional chocolate and vanilla to coffee and banana butterscotch. Prish produces nine flavors each day, the bestseller being Black Bottom—a swirl of chocolate chip-studded cream cheese through rich chocolate cake. Red Velvet follows—pure Southern decadence of moist red cake topped with vanilla frosting.
